What is Urbana High School MiniTHON?
Urbana High School MiniTHON is a year long fundraising event for the organization, Four Diamonds, to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer. Our fight at Urbana began in 2015. In 2014, four students came to the advisors with an idea, a goal, and a vision to give back to children, and they learned about THON, the Penn State 46 Hour Dance Marathon, and learned about Four Diamonds. With a goal of $10,000, the students spent the 2014-2015 school year fundraising through various means, and ended up raising over $22,000.00. Our second year, we doubled our goal by raising over $42,000.00!! In the past four years, we have raised over $155,000.00 For the Kids!
Everything we do is for the kids. UHS Mini-THON is an official part of Penn State Dance Marathon (THON). THON is the largest student-run philanthropy organization in the world, with all proceeds going to help fight pediatric cancer at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
The Event
Our Mini-THON is a non-profit, annual fundraiser consisting of a 7-hour, no-sitting event. The participants, called "dancers", are high school students of all grades, who raise a minimum amount in order to participate. Some of the highlights of Mini-THON include community hour, the Zumba THON, the group competitions, and the inflatable moon bounces. Several Four Diamonds Families have graciously joined our UHS Mini-THON family, and they spend time with us during the event to share stories of the hardships pediatric cancer has caused their families. Points are allotted for each game and at the end of Mini-THON we announce a winning grade. At the end of the evening, the numbers are lifted, revealing the total amount of money raised.
FTKThe motto of THON is "FTK". Everything we do is "For The Kids". Whether we are approaching businesses for donations, putting in long hours planning Mini-THON, or standing without rest for 7 hours, the kids fighting cancer are our inspiration.
